Champion Container acquires 80,000 s/f facility

5 Firestone Drive - Suffield, CT

Suffield, CT Champion Container has acquired an 80,000 s/f facility at 5 Firestone Dr. to serve as a distribution center for the company.  Champion, founded in 1968, is headquartered in Avenel, N.J.  The Suffield location is Champion’s fifth facility joining two in N.J., one in Rosedale, Maryland and one in Sutton, Mass.  The firm distributes a wide range of containers from steel, plastic and fiber drums, pails, cans, bottles and jars. They specialize in “just in time” shipments utilizing their own fleet of trucks.

Champion acquired the property in August 2016 for $1.8 million.  Chris Colli of Chestnut Oak Associates represented the seller, GHW Realty Associates Limited Partnership.  Nick Morizio of Collier’s International represented the buyer.  The building, which was constructed in 1979, was most recently occupied by AB Massa, a specialty paper company.

Champion is making significant upgrades to the facility which had been vacant for over a year.  Champion is investing $1million to upgrade the facility with an improved electrical system, refreshed office area, and new sprinkler system.  Champion is bringing 15 quality jobs to the community with a hope of doubling that in the future.  The town has provided a 3-year, 50% tax abatement on the real estate portion of their taxes as an incentive for Champion’s large investment in the community.

Tom Miskewitz, president and COO, said, “We’re thrilled to be in our new Suffield location. We believe the area provides us ample opportunities to better serve our customers and to continue our growth while employing the local talent. We look forward to being a part of the community.”
