By Mark Roberts: ABCMA holds annual Excellence in Construction Awards at Build Boston

Associated Builders and Contractors of Mass. (ABCMA) isn't just the commonwealth's largest construction trade organization. Nor is it just the voice of the merit shop. ABCMA represents the very best of the open shop in Massachusetts. That's why the annual Excellence in Construction Awards (EICA) are such an important part of what we do. They symbolize the excellence that is central to our mission. I'm proud to say that this year's EICA was bigger and better than ever. The awards dinner was held at the Seaport World Trade Center on November 17. The event was part of the Build Boston conference, which further enhances your opportunity to network with owners and architects, as well as the general and subcontractors that worked on the winning projects. We enhanced the media component of EICA, which helped spread the word about the excellence of ABC members' work. This year, Joe Shortsleeve, chief correspondent for WBZ-TV Channel 4 News, was the emcee the event. We have also launched what we hope will be an increasingly close relationship with the Boston Business Journal (BBJ), which featured a special insert on this year's EICA winners. EICA has never been so well positioned to get the word out about the excellence of ABCMA-member companies. Mark Roberts is the Associated Builders and Contractors of Mass. chapter president, Burlington, Mass.

State legislature ends session without passing PLA bill - by Joe Camilo

Massachusetts taxpayers dodged a bullet when the state Senate didn’t take up legislation passed by the House in the waning moments of the legislative session that would have made it easier for municipalities and state agencies to use union-only project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction projects.

When it comes to corporate interior spaces for both commercial and industrial projects, partnering with a design-build firm with in-house interior design services can offer clients many benefits. Ask the Electrician: How do I prepare my commercial building for a disaster?

New England’s notorious weather – from fierce winter storms to summer squalls and fall hurricanes – can leave businesses in the dark. While power outages are often blamed on storms, they can also be caused by unforeseen events like accidents or construction mishaps. While it’s impossible to prevent disasters and power outages entirely, proactive preparation can significantly minimize their impact on your commercial building.
