Brownfield professionals organization, LSP, elects officers: Feldman of GZA GeoEnvironmental named president

Lawrence Feldman, senior principal with GZA GeoEnvironmental, was elected president of the LSP Assn., an organization representing nearly 1,000 licensed site professionals and related professionals. A resident of Newton, Feldman has been with GZA for more than 30 years. He is a former member of the LSP Board of Registration, which oversees the licensing and enforcement of professional standards for LSP, and sits on the Commonwealth's hazardous waste site cleanup advisory committee. LSPs are scientists and engineers experienced in the assessment and cleanup of oil and hazardous material contamination. The LSPA represents those professionals, and has as its primary mission the promotion of sound business and technical practices among its members. It also serves as an advocate for issues that impact environmental professionals, community stakeholders and the community as a whole. Mass. was the first state in the nation to privatize its cleanup program and, through licensing LSPs, has greatly increased the number of contaminated sites cleaned and made available for reuse. On average, only 22 sites a year were closed out between 1983 and 1993 before the privatized system was initiated. By 2006, nearly 30,000 sites have been closed out, an average of 2,900 per year. Other officers elected were treasurer, Andrew Irwin, president of Irwin Engineers, Natick; clerk, Farooq Siddique, founder of FS Engineers, Acton; and president elect, Carl Shapiro, principal, Wheatstone Engineering & Consulting, Braintree.
