ACEC/MA names GZA as Gold Winner for reservoir dam project

Northampton, MA The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. as a 2019 Gold winner for Engineering Excellence for their work on the Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam Breach and Stream restoration project.

The Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir Dam Breach and Stream restoration project is the tallest dam removed in Massachusetts to date. The project was unique in that it required active sluicing of about 10,000 cubic yards of sediment to the downstream sediment starved reaches to improve the aquatic habitat, promote natural streambed development within the former impoundment, and save the city approximately $500,000 in deferred dredging and disposal costs. Due to the “in the wet” construction approach and rainy summer weather of 2018, the project was successfully completed in one construction season.

The 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards were named at the ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with special guest emcees Jonathan Gulliver, highway administrator at MassDOT and Frederick Laskey, executive director of MWRA.

“Each year we gather to celebrate and recognize engineering firms for projects that demonstrate innovation and excellence,” said Michael Walsh, PE, president of ACEC/MA and vice president of CDM Smith. “We congratulate our winners who work tirelessly throughout the year to advance the goals and values of our organization and the industry.”
