2023 Year in Review: Roderick Shaffert, Bowdoin Construction Corp

Roderick Shaffert
Vice President/Project Executive
Bowdoin Construction Corp

What person, project, transaction, or market trend had the greatest impact on your industry this year? While attending the DBIA national conference this year, it was exciting to hear how more owners are seeing the benefits of design-build as a delivery system to help control costs, meet schedule and provide better quality. It’s predicted that by 2026, 47% of all construction spending nationwide will be design-build.

What was your greatest professional accomplishment or most notable project, deal, or transaction in 2023? In 2023 we completed design-build projects across three important markets: a lab fit-up, a Passive House residential project, and a sales/service/parts facility for a large equipment distributor. This growth allowed us to expand our in-house design-build capabilities, develop stronger relationships with design partners, and provide greater value to our customers.

What emerging trends will drive investment and development in 2024? As construction labor shortages continue to be an issue, technology will remain an important part of the growth of our industry. From the panelized shell construction of passive house buildings to a potential 3-D printed addition to a storage facility, we look forward to bringing creative solutions to our clients.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
