2023 Women in CRE: Maria Green, Corporation for Independent Living (CIL)

Maria Green
Vice President/Chief Financial Officer
Corporation for Independent Living (CIL)

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of? I am proud of the challenges we overcame and all we learned from navigating our business through the pandemic. There were many changes to managing a business during that time, followed by more recent changes in the banking world, making project financings more difficult. It required a lot of patience, understanding and diligence from our team and I couldn’t be prouder of how we have persevered.

What are the most important factors women in your industry should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with? Be very curious. Ask questions to understand the culture of a workplace and how it matches your goals and lifestyle. Your workplace ends up becoming a major part of your life, so ask questions to make sure the job is a good fit.

Who inspires you most? What qualities do they possess that inspire you? My mom inspires me the most. She has faced cancer twice and in the face of adversity, she always finds a way to laugh, be positive, appreciative, and make sure her family is taken care of. She is strong and motivates me to handle life as she does.

Why should this nominee be recognized in our Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight? “Commercial real estate requires money and Maria Green has spent her entire career finding innovative and creative ways to build financially sustainable capital stacks for complex projects. Her expertise involves all aspects of project funding from due diligence and acquisition through construction and operations.” - Kent Schwendy, CEO at CIL

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
