2023 Women in CRE: Laurel Bowerman, Washington Trust

Laurel Bowerman
Vice President, Commercial Real Estate
Washington Trust

What recent project, transaction, or accomplishment are you most proud of? While I enjoy funding multifamily, industrial, retail, and hotel developments, the most unique project I recently financed was the restoration of Pontiac Mills, a multi-building complex that was used to weave Union uniforms during the Civil War. Restoration of these brick and beam buildings into apartments, offices, a brewery, and other retail spaces created a visual representation of our history and highlighted our ability to adapt and preserve historic properties.

Who inspires you most? What qualities do they possess that inspire you? I am inspired by the vast number of unsung heroes who do the right thing and do things right.

What are the most important factors women in your industry should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with? Since we spend most of our waking hours at work, we want to look forward to each working day. I think one of the most important factors to consider when choosing where to build your career is to choose an organization that values its employees and provides opportunities to grow.

Why should this nominee be recognized in our Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight? “Laurel is an experienced professional who brings varied banking and business experience to the team. She is a seasoned professional, a top performer who also serves as a mentor and role model for our team. She is solution-oriented, a strong advocate for both the bank and her clients, and is a pleasure to work with.  She is an incredibly strong asset to our Bank and to our industry.” - Julia Anne Slom, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Real Estate Lending Officer at Washington Trust.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
