2023 Ones to Watch Rising Stars: Derek Bernat, Callahan Construction Managers

Derek Bernat
Lead Superintendent
Callahan Construction Managers

Number of years at firm: 8

One thing on my bucket list: I’ve always wanted to try motorized paragliding. I have not had success getting approval from my wife!

When I am not working, I am: Enjoying time with my wife and two young kids, spending as much time outdoors as possible.

What recent project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of? Most recently I’ve been working towards creating a more respectful culture and environment for our trade partners in construction. I believe that respect in the construction industry at times gets lost due to fast-paced schedules and various restrictions enforced by the end goal. My objective is to create a mutually respectful environment and quality of life equal to other professions. In doing this, I believe that not only will workers feel proud to come to work but the quality of work will also increase.

What makes this nominee a RISING STAR?

“Derek made a conscious decision to be the best Lead Super and have the most well-run project in the company. He asked to be challenged and critiqued to push him toward that goal. On his project you can feel the difference the minute you step foot on site.” - Joe Roche, Project Executive at Callahan Construction Managers

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
