2022 Women in Construction: Kate Martin, Assistant Estimator at BW Kennedy

Kate Martin

What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months? The most notable project I have had the opportunity to be a part of was Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Devens, MA. I was able to contribute to the estimating and preconstruction planning efforts for a 165,000 s/f ground up office and manufacturing space.

Starting out in the construction business, who or what empowered you? Starting out in construction, the person who has empowered me most is my mother. Growing up, my mother was a project manager and I always admired her determination and resilience when it came to being a woman in construction. I took those traits into my own career, and I am so grateful I had her as a role model!

Within your firm, who has helped you succeed within the industry? How have they helped you?

The person who has helped me the most within the industry would have to be my senior estimator, Mike. He is always supportive and patient, and he is always ready to help me and push me to do my absolute best.

When you’re not busy, what is your go to book or podcast to help you unwind? My go to book to unwind is anything by Colleen Hoover. I don’t have a favorite, but everything I have read by her has been great!

What tips or advice would you offer to other women who are considering entering the construction industry? My advice to women considering construction is do not underestimate yourself. Being a woman in construction can seem intimidating, but always be up for the challenge and never forget what you are capable of accomplishing.

Investing in a falling rate environment - by Harrison Klein

Long-term interest rates have fallen by 100 basis points, and the market is normalizing. In December of 2022 I wrote an article about investing in a high interest rate, high inflation market. Since then, inflation has cooled off, and the Fed has begun lowering their funds rate.
