2021 Women in Construction: Lucia Johnston, Project Manager, Network Design and Construction, Inc.

Starting out in the A/E/C business, who or what empowered you? When I went to start my career, I went with my portfolio to meet with different firms. At one of my first appointments I knocked on the door to the office suite to find one person, at one desk. I thought, this is probably not going to lead to getting hired. This person made one phone call to another firm, which lead to me being hired. At this firm, there was a woman V.P. who always got on the phone with the most positive attitude, confidence and focus. Listening to her interact with clients empowered me to do the same. These two individuals helped me realize that anyone can make a big difference in someone else’s life.

What are you most looking forward to post-pandemic? I’m looking forward to getting back down to Newport. I’ve missed the great architecture and all the hidden gems that it has. For me, Newport is a great place to get re-energized and brings me much happiness.
