What are some of the benefits of being a mentor or having a mentor? I was lucky to connect with my mentor early in my career, just as I was exiting college and entering the workforce. My mentor challenged me daily to be creative in finding solutions, resourceful when looking for answers and to not be afraid to ask questions. This forced me to think on my feet early in my career. He taught me that communication with my peers and clients is just as important as the work we do and that there is always a solution to an engineering problem. Being a mentor myself has allowed me to pass on my excitement for the new challenges that we face in our development projects and the satisfaction we enjoy when we have successfully permitted a new project in our community.

Who or what has been the strongest influence on your career and why? My mentor, Joe Peznola, P.E. has been the biggest influence on my career. Under Joe’s guidance I learned the importance of client communication, relationships and dedication to the project at hand, no matter the size or complexity. I learned to take pride in my work, in my presentation of the development plans to a client and the community and commitment to provide quality, sustainable projects. These lessons have allowed me to open a successful civil engineering branch office for HSH, continue to grow and advance engineering projects to benefit the developers and communities we work in.
