2018 Women in Construction: Sue Ellen Walker, Delphi Construction Inc.

Name: Sue Ellen Walker

Postiton: Assistant Project Manager

Company: Delphi Construction Inc.

Years in the A/E/C Industry: 31 years

Why the A/E/C Industry? It all started in 7th grade art class when I was introduced to mechanical drafting. This lead to my first summer job in high school where I worked in the drafting department for a local geotechnical engineering firm. That interaction with the engineers is when I knew I wanted to be a civil engineer. After graduating with a BS in Civil Engineering, my career has allowed me to work in various areas of site design, environmental and conservation permitting to where I am now currently in construction management, which is the most rewarding.

Advice/Keys to Success: Love what you do, be a good listener and pay attention to the details.

What was your most notable project in 2017? A high-end residential, waterfront home with a guest house on Cape Cod, for which we received an ABC 2017 Excellence in Construction Merit Award.

If you had a mentor in your career, who was it and what did they teach you? I have been fortunate to have numerous people that have influenced and supported me throughout my career. The most influential person is my mother, an elementary school teacher who always encouraged me to question, explore and follow my heart.
